Lactoferrin

OTHER NAME(S): bovine lactoferrin (bLF), lactoferrin

Overview

Lactoferrin is a protein found in cow’s milk and human milk which is available over the counter as a supplement. It is often used to help manage and prevent low iron levels. Although it may also be used to support the immune system and improve digestive health, its benefits for these uses are not well defined. Lactoferrin seems to be well tolerated by most people, but you should avoid these supplements if you have high iron levels. Before taking lactoferrin, tell your health care provider about all of your health conditions and any medicines or supplements you may be using.
