Witch Hazel

OTHER NAME(S): witch hazel, witch hazel topical, Hamamelis virginiana

Overview

Witch hazel is applied to the skin to help soothe irritation caused by small cuts, insect bites, or hemorrhoids. It works by reducing inflammation (swelling) and pulling water out of the skin. The most common side effect is dry skin. Speak with a health care provider if your skin gets worse while using witch hazel or if it does not improve within 7 days. Witch hazel is available over-the-counter (OTC) in various forms, such as a liquid, a spray, and liquid-soaked pads.
